Smile! Now that President Biden’s in charge with 2 additional stimulus checks and more of us now fully vaccinated … we’re beginning to be able to think of being stuck inside on Zoom with family and friends as “back then”.
When looking back on the coronavirus pandemic, a number of things will come to mind. Namely: sweatpants, baking (a lot of baking), and virtual quizzes. We’ve all been quizzing way more than we ever have before. Don’t know about you, but we’re genuinely eyeing up a career change as one of the experts on The Chase. Bradley Walsh? Give us a call.
Here are some challenges from the Entertainment sphere. Celebrities? Movies? Music? We got it covered. These are kinda tough… so don’t forget to let me know how you did — and do share with your friends on social media.
WHY THE CAMBRIDGES CHANGED THEIR INSTAGRAM HANDLE
They’re No Longer @KENSINGTONROYAL
It’s all on over at camp Cambridge! Not only have Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, their very own YouTube channel [The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge] complete with behind-the-scenes blooper footage, but they’ve also changed their Instagram handle.
When the royal couple first joined the social media site six years ago, they created the handle @KensingtonRoyal (a nod to their base at Kensington Palace). It quickly became a go-to account for royal enthusiasts, amassing some 12 million followers – and it’s where they’ve continuously shared photos of their work, alongside more intimate family moments, including portraits of their three children (Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis).
Now, the handle has been changed *can I get a drum roll, please...* to @DukeandDuchessofCambridge. This makes sense for obvious reasons (it’s easier for people who aren’t fully embedded in all-things royal and who’d know the couple’s links to Kensington Palace to find, for starters) and also maintains synergy between the couple’s new YouTube channel name. [The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge].
However, over on Twitter the @KensingtonRoyal handle is still in place. A quick search shows there’s no account with the handle @DukeandDuchessofCambridge on that platform, so perhaps it won’t be too long before we see the switch made there as well.
Since changing their handle, the Cambridges’ newly-anointed Instagram account has already posted a sweet birthday message to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son, Archie, who turned two May 6th, and shared another teaser about Kate’s photography project, Hold Still.
We can’t wait to see what else the YouTube channel and revamped Instagram account has to offer.
A BIZARRE, yet Historic Academy Awards Telecast
Politically themed films were among the contenders for the Academy Awards‘ top prize, with “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, “Mank” and “Judas and the Black Messiah” among the best picture nominees. Whatever …, it’s for sure that what the stars wore will be just as discussed as who won or didn’t.
ALL THE FASHION & DRESSES
The event took place in-person at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles April 25th. For Hollywood’s biggest night, both A-list nominees and presenters were bound to make an appearance, including Andra Day, Vanessa Kirby, Carey Mulligan, Viola Davis, and Frances McDormand. Better yet, all of these celebrities walked the “Red Carpet” before the show in their finest evening attire.
“I wish I had time to talk about judgment,” said Tyler Perry, after receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award during the 93rd Academy Awards.
Perry, a movie mogul, has built a 330-acre studio facility in Atlanta used for all kinds of work, including parts of the Marvel epic “Black Panther.”
It’s logical for Perry to receive the Jean Hersholt award, in part because of his rags-to-riches life and his efforts to help churches and nonprofits reach the needy. At the same time, it’s thought by many unlikely that he could ever win a regular Oscar, since critics and Hollywood elites have long mocked his movies as soapy parables crafted to appeal to ordinary church folks — black and white.
So, Perry’s sermonette was an unusual twist in an Oscar rite packed with political messages and wins by films that few American moviegoers saw or even knew existed. Ratings for the broadcast plunged to a record low of 9.85 million viewers, which was 58% lower than the 2020 low of 23.6 million viewers. In comparison, the 1998 Oscars — with the blockbuster “Titanic” — drew 57.25 million viewers.
Even The New York Times quoted an anonymous Hollywood player, who noted that “minute-by-minute post-show rating analysis indicates that ‘vast swaths’ of people turned off their televisions when celebrities started to opine on politics.”
While discussing his mother, Tyler Perry described how she “taught me to refuse hate” and to “refuse blanket judgment.”
That’s a hard message to hear, he said, in the age of the “internet and social media and algorithms and everything that wants us to think a certain way.” Still, that’s a message parents need to be teaching their children.
BUT, THE OSCARS ARE STILL ALL ABOUT ENTERTAINMENT, TOO.
SPEAKING OF BUT… TAKE IT AWAY GLENN CLOSE!
THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE …
But the Biggest News May Be WHERE We Watch!
Movie prospects are getting better as more and more vaccine is rolled out. For starters we’ll be getting another Asian blockbuster in director Destin Daniel Cretton’s Marvel entry, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The Fast Family will be back for another action-packed installment. Dom Toretto doesn’t have friends; he has family. And when Dom and his family get down to business in this racing franchise-turned-blockbuster behemoth, it usually involves a lot of fast cars and explosive action.
One big change in 2021: The way we watch movies is changing big time. As Gerard Butler’s GBase Productions stepped out with the Indie Film Greenland in a bold move that paid off big time, now Warner Bros., for example, has announced that they will release their entire slate of 2021 movies on HBO Max as well as in theaters in an unprecedented move that could signal bigger changes in the industry.
